AGRATUMATI, a river of the province and government of Darien, in the kingdom of Tierra Firme. It rises in the mountains of the ». and efiters the sea by the Little Beech, opposite Calidonia.

AGREDA, or NUEVA MA'LAGA, a city of the province and government of Popayan, in the kingdom of Quito, founded by Geronimo Aguado in 1541. It is small, and of a hot temperature, but abounds in gold mines. Forty-five leagues s. w. of its capital, 42 from Quito, and 37 to the e. of the S, sea.

AGRESINAS, a settlement founded by the Portuguese fathers of the Carmelite. order, in the country of the Amazonas, situate on the shores of the river Amazonas.

AGRIAS, a nation of Indians of the province and government of Santa Marta, to the w. of the Cienega Grande. It was formerly very numerous, but at present considerably reduced.

AGUA, Port of, on the n. coast of the island of St. Domingo, between Point Rabeland the Bay of Marques-

Agua, a small island, situate near the k. coast of the island of Vaca, in the channel formed by the island of St. Domingo, in front of the bay of Mesle.

Agua, also Ojos de Agua, two springs or fountains of the province and corregimi'ento of Cuyo, in the kingdom of Chile, near the lake of Inca, from whence the river Quillota takes its source.

Agua Blanca, a settlement of the province and government of Venezuela, situate between the rivers Sarare and Acarigua, to the e. of the town of Araure.

Agua Buena y Dulce, or Fresh Water, a bay of the strait of Magellan, near the bay of La Gente.

Agua-Caliente, a settlement of the kingdom of Guatemala.

Agua-Clara, a river of the province and government of Paraguay. It runs e. and enters the Parana on the w. side.

Agua Colorada, a river of the same province and government as the former(Paraguay), which runs e. and enters also the large river of Parana.

==Agua de Culebra, SAN FRANCISCO XAVIER DE LA==, 'a settlement of the province and government of Venezuela, a reduccionof Indians of the Capuchin fathers ; but the place is also inhabited by some Spanish families. It belongs to the

district and jurisdiction of the city of San Felipe ; and in its vicinity dwell a great number of people in the estates belonging to it, and which produce abundance of cacao, plantains, yucas, and other vegetable productions.

Agua-Dulce, Caleta de, or Creek of, on the s. coast of the strait of Magellan, on the side of the bay of San Martin.

Agua Escondida, a settlement of the province and government of Sonora in Nueva Espana, situate at the foot of a mountain, and to the n. of Santa Clara.

Agua-Verde, an island of the gulph of California, or Red sea of Cortes, situate near the coast, between the islands of Carmen and Monserrat.

AGUACAGUA, a settlement of the province of Guayana, and government of Cumana, one of those belonging to the missions of the Catalanian Capuchin fathers. It is on the shore of the river Caroni, near the mouth, through which this enters the Orinoco. Lat. 8° 22' n. Long. 62^ 42' w.

AGUACATAL, a settlement of the province and government of Antioquia, situate in the valley of Peneo, on the shore of the river Cauca. Lat. 8° n. Long. 75° 28' w.

AGUACATENANGO, a settlement of the province and alceddia mayor of Chiapa in the kingdom of Guatemala. [Lat. 16° 18' n. Long. 91° 57' a).]

AGUACATLAN, the head settlement of the district of the alcaldia mayor of Xala in N ueva Espana. In 1745 it contained 80 families of Indians, who employed themselves in the culture of maize and French beans. It has a convent of the religious order of St. Francis, and lies two leagues s. e. of its capital.

AGUACHAPA, a settlement of the province and government of Nicaragua in the kingdom of Guatemala.

AGUADA, a settlement of the island of Portorico ; situate in the bay of its name (Aguda), between the capes Boriquen and St. Francis. It serves as an inlet for ships going to Tierra Firme and Nueva Espana to take in water. [Lat. 18° 23' «. Long. 67° 6' a;.]

Aguada (Bay), the aforesaid bay (Aguda) in the above island (Porto rico).

Aguada (point), the point on the coast and at the head of the above island, 27 leagues distant from the cape of San Rafael, of the island of St. Domingo.

Tiene este mismo nombre una Isla pequeña, situada junto a la Costa del N de la de Vaca, en el canal que forma con la de Santo Domingo, enfrente de la Bahía de Mesle.

Tiene este mismo nombre, el de ojos de agua dos manantiales o fuentes de la Provincia y Corregimiento de Cuyo, en el Reyno de Chile, cerca de la laguna del Inca, de donde nace el río Quillota.

AGUABLANCA, Pueblo de la Provincia y Gobierno de Venezuela, situado entre los Ríos de Sarare y Acarigua, al E de la Villa de Araure.

AGUA BUENA Y DULCE, Bahía del estrecho de Magallanes, cerca de la de la Gente.

AGUACAGUA, Pueblo de la Provincia de Guayana y Gobierno de Cumaná , uno de las Misiones que en ella tienen los Padres Capuchinos Catalanes; está a la orilla del río Caroni, cerca de la boca por donde entra al Orinoco.

AGUACATLAN, Pueblo y Cabecera de Partido de la Alcaldía mayor de Xala, en Nueva España; tenia por los años de 1745 80 familias de Indios, que se exercitaban en las labores del maiz y frixol; hay en él un Convento de Religiosos de San Francisco, y dista 2 leguas enrre Oriente y Sur de su Capital.

AGUACEAPA, Pueblo de la Provincia y Gobierno de Nicaragua, en el Reyno de Goatemala.

AGUADA, Pueblo de la Isla de Puertorrico, situado en la Bahía de su nombre, entre los cabos de Boriquen y San Francisco, sirve de escala a las embarcaciones que van a Tierra Firme y a Nueva España para hacer agua.

Tiene el mismo nombre la citada Bahía en la misma Isla.

Tiene el mismo nombre la punta de la Costa y Cabeza del O de la propia Isla, distante 27 leguas del Cabo de San Rafael de la de Santo Domingo, long. 3091 30, lat. 19.

Tiene el mismo nombre Un río cerca del Cabo o Punta antecedente, y en la misma Isla, que es a donde hacen la aguada las embarcaciones.

Tiene el mismo nombre Otro río pequeño de la Provincia y Capitanía del Río Grande, en el Brasil, que nace cerca de la Costa, y corre al S SE, saliendo al mar junto al Cabo de San Roque.

captainship of the Rio Grande in Brazil. It rises near the coast, and runs s. s. e. entering the sea close to the cape of San Roque.

Aguada, a sharp point or small island of the S. sea, near the coast, in the province and corregimiento of Atacama.

Aguada (point in Cartagena), a point on the coast of Tierra Firme, in the province and government of Cartagena. It is one of those which form the mouth of the gulph of Uraba or Darien.

AGUADILLA, a river of the province and kingdom of Tierra Firme. It rises in the mountains on the s. and enters the large river Chagre very near its mouth, and the castle of this name. Here ships take in water, on account of the convenience of a bay, for the defence of which there is, upon the shore, a battery belonging to the same castle, which was built under the directions of Don Dionisio de Alcedo, in 1743.

AGUADORES, River of the, in the island of Cuba. It runs into the sea on the s. coast of this island, having at its mouth a watch-tower and guard to give notice of vessels which may enter the port of Santiago de Cuba, from whence it is seven leagues distant.

AGUAIO, a settlement of the province and government of Sierra Gorda, in the bay of Mexico, and kingdom of Nueva España, founded in the year 1748 by the Colonel of the militia of Queretaro, Don Joseph de Escandon, Count of Sierra Gorda.

Aguaio, another settlement, with the dedicatory title of San Miguel, in the new kingdom of Leon, inhabited by Spaniards ; 10 leagues distant from La Punta.

AGUAIUS, a settlement of the province and government of Quixos and Marcas in the kingdom of Quito.

AGUAJES, a settlement of the province of Tepeguna, and kingdom of Nueva Vizcaya, situate on the shore of the river of Las Nasas.

AGUALEI, a small river of the province and government of Guayana, which rises in the sierras of Usupama, and enters the Caroni on the e. side.

AGUALULCO, a settlement and capital of the jurisdiction of [Izatlan]] in Nueva Galicia. It has a convent of the religious order of St. Francis, and in 1745 it contained upwards of 100 families of Indians, including the wards of its district; 17 leagues w. of Guadalaxara. Lat. 20° 44' n. Long. 103° 33' w.

AGUAMENA, a settlement of the jurisdiction of Santiago de las Atalayas, and government of San Juan de los Llanos, in the Nuevo Reyno de Granada, annexed to the curacy of that city. It is of a hot temperature, and produces the same fruits as the other settlements of this province.

AGUAMIRO, a settlement of the province and cer re gimiento of Huamalies in Peru, celebrated for some medicinal and very salutary baths.

AGUAN, a river of the province and government of Honduras, which runs into the sea at the gulph of this name.

AGUANATO, Santa Maria de, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of Puruandiro, and alcaldia mayor of Valladolid, in the province and bishopric of Mechoacan. It is of a cold temperature, situate at the foot of the sierra of Curupo, and contains 36 families of Indians, who gain their livelihood by trading in dressed hides. Sixteen leagues from Pasquaro or Valladolid.

AGUANO, a lake of the province and government of Mainas in the kingdom of Quito. ' It is formed by an arm or channel of the river Guallaga, and is very near the shore of that river.

AGUANOS, San Antonio de, a settlement of the province and government of Mainas in the kingdom of Quito ; one of those which belonged to the missions held there by the Jesuits, and thus called from the nation of Indians of whom it is composed. It was founded in 1670 by the father Lorenzo Lucero.

Aguanos, another settlement, with the dedicatory title of San Francisco, in this province, and of these missions.

AGUAPAI, a river of the province and government of Paraguay. It rises between the Parana and the Uruguay, near the settleiment of San Carlos, runs j. forming a curve, and returning c. enters the last of the above rivers not far from the settlement of La Cruz.

Aguapai, another river of the same province and government, which runs w. and enters the Parana close to the Juan Gazu.

AGUAPEI, a river of the same province and government as the two former. It is very small, and rises in the mountains of Nuestra Senora de Fe ; runs from n. to s. and enters the Parana.

AGUARAU, a river of the province and government of Paraguay, which runs w. and enters the Parana between the Inau and Piray .

AGUARICO, San Pedro de, a settlement of Indians, converted by the missions of the Jesuits, in the province and government of Mainas; situate on the shore of the river Napo.

anti government of Darien, near the n. coast, and thus "called from an eagle Avitli two heads, which was caught here in 1608, and which Avas sent to the queen, Doha Maria-Ana of Austria, mother of Philip III. At its skirt is a bay, or swampy ground, which is round, and has a very narroAV inlet. Forty-five leagues from Cartagena.

Aguila (point), a point or cape of the larger island of the Malvinas or Falkland isles ; thus named from having been discovered by the French frigate, the Aguila, or Eagle. It is one of those whith form tlie great bay or port.

AGUILUSCO, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of Arantzan, and alcaldia mayor of Valladolid, in the province and bishopric of Mechoacan. It contains 32 families of Indians, who employ themselves in sowing seed, cutting Avood, manufacturing vessels of fine earth en-Avare, and saddle-trees for riding.

AGUIRRE, a river of the province and government of Venezuela. It rises by the side of the city of Niura, runs s. passes through the town of San Carlos, and enters the Sarara.

Aguirre (pastures), some pastures for young horses in the province and corregimiento of Coquimbo, of the kingdom of Chile, between the rivers Ramos and Mamas,

AGUJA, Point of the, on the coast of Tierra Firme, and of the province and government of Santa Marta, between this city and Cape Chichibacoa. It is the part of land which projects farthest into the sea.

AGUR, Francisco, a settlement of the province and captainship of Espiritu Santo in Brazil, situate near the coast and the bay of Espiritu Santo,

AGUSTIN, San, a capital city of the province and government of E. Florida, situate on the e. coast, in a peninsula, or narrow strip of land. It has a good port, which was discovered by Admiral Pedro Menendes de Aviles, on St. Augus-. tin’s day in the year 1565, which was his reason for giving the place this title, which has, however, been tAvice changed. He also built here a good castle for its defence. The city has a very good parish church, and a convent of the Franciscan order; and, as far as relates to its spiritual concerns, it is subject to the bishop of Cuba, who has at various times proposed the erection of an abbey, but has not obtained his wish, although it had been approved by the council of the Indies.

It has two hospitals, one for the garrison troops, and another for the community ; it has also an hermitage, Avith the dedicatory title of Santa Barbara. It was burnt by Francis Drake in 1586; by Captain Davis, Avith the Bucaniers, in 1665 ; but it was immediately afterwards rebuilt. In 1702 it Avas besieged by the English, under the command of Colonel Moore, who, failing in his attempts to take the castle, which Avas defended by the governor, Don Joseph de Zuniga, exhibited his revenge by burning and destroying the town. In 1744 the English returned to the siege, under the command of General Oglethorp, who was equally unsuccessful, in as much as it w^as most valiantly defended by the governor, Don Manuel de Montiano, who defied the bombardment of the enemy. This fort has a curtain of 60 toises long ; the parapet is nine feet ; and the terrace, or horizontal surface of the rampart, is 20 feet high, with good bomb-proof casemates, and mounted Avith 50 pieces of cannon, having also, on the exterior, an excellent covered way. The city, although it is encompassed by a wall, is not strong, and its defence consists in 10 projecting angles. It was ceded, Avith the whole of the province, to the English, by the King ofSpain, in the peace of Versailles, in 1762 ; and it remained in their possession till 1783, when it was restored by the treaty of Paris. The breakers at the entrance of the harbour have formed two channels, whose bars have eight feet of water each. Long. 81° 40'. Lat. 29° 58'.

Agustin, San, a settlement and real of mines, of the province of Tarauraara, in the kingdotli of Nueva Vizcaya, which was formerly a population of some consequence, and wealthy withal, from the richness of its mines, Avhich -have lately fallea into decay, and thereby entailed poverty upon the inhabitants. It is 26 leagues s. of the town of S, Felipe de Chiguagua.

Agustin, San, another small settlement or w ard of the head settlement of the district of Zumpahuacan, and alcaldia mayor of Marinalco, in Nueva España.

Agustin, San, another settlement of the head settlement of the district of Nopaluca, and alcaldia mayor of Tepcaca, in Nueva España. It contains 20 families of Indians, and is distant a little more than a league from its head settlement.

Agustin, San, another, in the head settlement of the district of Pinoteca, and alcaldia mayor of Xicayan. It contains 70 families of Indians, who trade in grain, seeds, and tobacco. Four league n. of its head settlement.

AGUILUSCO, Pueblo de la Cabezera de Partido y Alcaldía mayor de Tala, en Nueva España, situado al N de aquella.

AGUIRAN, San Mateo de, Pueblo de la Cabezera de Partido de Arantzan y Alcaldía mayor de Valladolid, en la Provincia y Obispado de Mechoacan ; tiene 32 familias de Indios que se ocupan en el cultivo de las semillas, labrar maderas, fabricar loza y hacer fustes dt sillas para montar.

AGUIRRE, Río de la Provincia y Gobierno de Venezuela, nace al lado de la Ciudad de Nirúa, corre al S, pasa por la Villa de S. Carlos, y entra en el de Sarara.

Tienen el mismo nombre unos potreros de criar ganado, en la Provincia y Corregimiento de Coquimbo, del Reyno de Chile, entre los rios de Ramos y de Mamas.

AGUJA, Punta de la, en la Costa de Tierra Firme y Provincia y Gobierno de Santa Marta ; entre. esta Ciudad y el Cabo de Chichibacoa; es la parte de tierra que sale mas al mar.

Tiene el mismo nombre, otra en la Costa de la mar del S y Provincia y Corregimiento de Piura en el Peru.

AGUR, Francisco, Pueblo de la Provincia y Capitanía]] del Espíritu Santo, en el Brasil, situado cerca de la Costa y de la Bahía del Espíritu Santo.

AGUSTIN, San, Ciudad Capital de la Provincia y Gobierno de la Florida, situada en la Costa Oriental de ella, en una Península o lengua de tierra, con un buen Puerto que descubrió el Almirante Pedro Menern dea de Aviles, el dia de S. Agustín, el año de 1565 por cuya razón le dio este nombre a la Población, que fundó con un buen Castillo para su defensa; pero ha sido mudada dos veces: tiene muy buena Iglesia Parroquial, y un Convento de Religiosos de San Francisco, sujeto en lo espiritual al Obispo de Ouba, que ha propuesto varias veces la erección de una Abadía; pero no ha tenido efecto, aunque fue aprobada por el Consejo de Indias: dos Hospitales, uno para la Tropa del presidio, y otra para el vecindario, y una Hermita con la advocación de Santa Bárbara: Francisco Drack la quemó el año de 1586: el Capitán Bavis con los Bucaniers, en 1665; pero se reedificó inmediatamente: el de 170a la sitiaron los Ingleses, mandados por el Coronel Moore, que no pudiendo tomar el Castillo, defendido por el Gobernador, Don Joseph de Zúñiga, se vengaron en quemar y destruir la Población: el de 1744 volvieron a sitiarla con el General Oglethorp, que tampoco logró tomarlo, porque la defendió valerosamente su Gobernador Don Manuel de Montiano, sufriendo el bombardeo de los enemigos; esta Fortaleza tiene una cortina de 60 toesas de largo, el parapeto es de 9 pies, y el terraplén de 10 de alto, con buenas casamatas a prueba de bomba r y guarnecido con 50 cañones, y en lo exterior muy buencamino cubierto: la Ciudad, aunque está amurallada, no es muy fuerte, y su defensa consiste en 10 ángulos salientes: fue cedida con toda la Provincia a los Ingleses por el Rey de España, en la Paz de Versalles, el año de 1762, y la han poseído hasta el de 1783, que la volvieron a restituir por el Tratado de Páris. Longitud 298 30, latitud 30.

Tiene el mismo nombre un Pueblo y Real de Minas de la Provincia de Taraumara, en el Reyno del Nueva Vizcaya, que fue en otro tiempo Población de crecido vecindario, y muy rica por la opulencia de sus minas, las quales han venido a mucha decadencia, y con ellas el Pueblo: está 26 leguas al S de la Villa de S. Felipe de Chiguagua.

Otro de la Cabecera de Partido de Nopaluca, y Alcaldía mayor de Tepeaca, en Nueva España: tiene 20 familias de Indios, y dista poco mas de una legua de su Cabecera.

Otro en la Cabecera de Partido de Pinoteca, y Alcaldía mayor de Xicayán: tiene 70 familias de Indios que comercian en grana, semillas y tabaco, y dista 4 leguas al N de su Cabecera.

Otro del Partido de Cuilapa, y Alcaldía mayor de 4 Villas: tiene 34 familias de Indios, que cultivan y comercian en grana, legumbres, carbón y corte de maderas: está poco menos de 1 leguas al Poniente, con inclinación al S de su Cabecera.

AHUACAZALCA, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of San Luis de la Costa, and alcaldia mayor of Tlapa, in Nueva Espaiia. It contains 56 families of Indians, -whose commerce consists in rice and cotton. Three leagues n. e. of its liead settlement.

AHUACAZINGO, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of Atengo, and alcaldia mayor of Chilapa, in Nueva Espana. It contains 46 families of Indians, and is ten leagues e. of its head settlement.

AHUALICAN, a settlement of the alcaldia mayor of Tixtlan in Nueva Espana ; of a benign and salutary temperature, as it is fanned by then, breezes. It lies three leagues n. of its head settlement, which is Oapan ; and contains 36 families of Indians.

AHUATELCO, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of the alcaldia mayor of Izucai in Nueva Espana, situate on the skirt of the volcano of the same name. In its district are eight settlements, inhabited by 289 families of Indians, and 11 of Musiees and Mulattoes, who live in some temporary habitations for labourers. It is situate on a cold, rough, and barren soil, but is nevertheless fertile in wheat, and abounds in water and cattle. Eight leagues n. w. of its capital.

AHUATEMPA, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of Santa Isabel, and alcaldia mayor of Cholula, in Nueva Espana. It contains 39 families of Indians, and is two leagues s.of its capital.

AHUATEPEC, a settlement of the head settlement of the district and alcaldia mayor of Tlapa in Nueva Espana. It contains 32 families of Indians, and is two leagues n. of its capitaL

AHUATLAN, San Pedko de, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of San Juan del Rio, and alcaldia mayor of Queretaro, in Nueva Espana ; annexed to the curacy of the former place, and lying ten leagues n. w, of the latter.

AHUEHUEZINGO, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of Chietlan, and alcaldia mayor of Izucar, in Nueva Espana.

AHUEZITLA, a settlement of the head settlement of the district and alcaldia mayor of Tlapa in Nueva Espana. It contains 36 families of Indians, and abounds in chia, (a white medicinal earth), grain, and earthen-ware. It is nine leagues w, n. w. of its capital.

AHWAHHAWAY, a race of Indians, who differ but very little in any particular from the Mandans, their neighbours, except in the unjust war which they, as well as the Minetares, prosecute against the defenceless Snake Indians. They claim to have once been a part of the Crow Indians, whom

they still acknowledge as relations. They have resided on the Missouri as long as their tradition will enable them to inform.

AIABACA, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Piura in Peru.

AIACASI, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Chumbivilcas in Peru, annexed to the curacy of Belille.

AIACOA, a small river of the province and government of Guayana, or Nueva Andalucia. It rises to the w. of the Sierra Maiguatida, runs e. and enters the Orinoco near the rapid stream of the Marumarota.

AIACOCHA, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Huanta in Peru, situate in the island Tayacaja.

AIAHUALTEMPA, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of Zitlala, and alcaldia mayor of Chilapa, in Nueva Espana. It contains 36 families of Indians, and is three leagues to the s. of its head settlement.

AIAHUALULCO, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of Ixlahuacan, and alcaldia mayor of Xalapa, in Nueva Espana, which, in the Mexican language, signifies a small river. It abounds in the best fruits of its jurisdiction, such as pears and other sorts of fruit highly esteemed at Vera Cruz. It contains only three families of Spaniards, 22 of Mustees and Mulattoes, and 70 of Indians. In its district are several temporary habi. tations for labourers, and pastures for breeding cattle, which reach as far as the district of Tepcaca, in the lofty eminence of Xamiltepec, 16 leagues distant from Xalapa. It includes also within its administration the cultivated estates extending as far as the place called Puertezuelo, where this jurisdiction approximates to that of San Juan de los Llanos on the w. s.w. side ; and in the culture of the above estates many Spaniards, 3Iustees, and Mulattoes, are employed. One league s. w. of its head settlement.

Aiahualulco, another settlement of the head settlement of the district of Zitlala, and alcaldia mayor of Chilapa, in the kingdom of Xalapa, and annexed to the curacy of this place, from which it is three leagues distant, being nine to the s. of its head settlement. It contains 42 families of Indians, including another small settlement incorporated with it.

AlAHUASA, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Aimaraez in Peru, annexed to the curacy of Pachaconas.

AIAMARCA, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Castro Virreyna in Peru, annexed to the curacy of Cordova.

AHUACAZALCA, Pueblo de la Cabecera de Partido de San Luis de la Costa, y Alcaldía mayor de Tlapa, en Nueva España: tiene 56 familias de indios, cuyo comercio consiste en arroz y algodón; está 3 leguas al NE de su Cabecera.

AHUACAZINGO, Pueblo de la Cabecera de Partido de Atengo, y Alcaldía mayor de Chilapa, en Nueva España ; tiene 46 familias de Indios, y está 10 leguas al Oriente de su Cabecera.

AHUALICAN, Pueblo de la Alcaldía mayor de Tixtlan, en nueva España, de benigno y saludable temperamento, por bañarle los ayres del N, a cuyo rumbo dista 3 leguas de su Cabecera, que es Oapan; tiene 36 familias de Indios.

AHUATELCO, Pueblo y Cabecera de Partido de la Alcaldía mayor de Izucar, en Nueva España, situado a la falda de un Volcan del mismo nombre: en su distrito hay 8 Pueblos que habitan 289 familias de Indios, y 11 de Mestizos y Mulatos, que viven en algunos ranchos de labor, su situación es en tierra fría, áspera y barrancosa; pero fértil en trigo, abundante en aguas y ganados: está 8 leguas entre Poniente y Norte de su Capital.

AHUATEPEC, Pueblo de la Cabecera de Partido, y Alcaldía mayor de Tlapa, en Nueva España: tiene 32 familias de Indios, y está 2 leguas al N de aquella.

AHUATEMPA, Pueblo de la Cabecera de Partido de Santa Isabel, y Alcaldía mayor de Cholula, en Nueva España: tiene 39 familias de Indios, y está a leguas al S de su Capital.

AHUEHUEZINGO, Pueblo de la Cabecera de Partido de Chietlán, y Alcaldía mayor de Izucar, en Nueva España.

AIACOA, Río pequeño de la Provincia y Gobierno de la Nueva Andalucía ; nace al O de la sierra Maiguatida, corre al E, y entra en el Orinoco, cerca del raudal de Marumarota.

AIACOCHA, Pueblo de la Provincia y Corregimiento de Huanta, en el Perú, situado en la Isla de Tayacaja.

AIAHUALTEMPA, Pueblo de la Cabecera de Partido de Zitlala, y Alcaldía mayor de Chilapa, en Nueva España; tiene 36 familias de Indios, y está 3 leguas al S de su Cabecera.

AIAHUALULCO, Pueblo de la Cabecera de Partido de Ixlahuacán, y Alcaldía mayor de Xalapa, en Nueva España, que en lengua Mexicana significa río pequeño, abunda en las mejores frutas de su jurisdicción, como peras y otras que son muy estimadas en la Vera Cruz; solo tiene 3 familias de Españoles, 22 de Mestizos y Mulatos, y 70 de Indios; en sus términos se hallan varios ranchos de labor y crias de ganado, que llegan hasta el distrito de Tepeaca, en el cerro de Xamiltepec, distante 16 leguas de Xalapa; y también pertenecen a su administracion las haciendas de labor que se hallan en los términos de este Pueblo, hasta el paraje llamado el Puertezuelo, donde esta jurisdicción raya con la de San Juan de los Llanos, por el OS O; y en las referidas haciendas trabajan muchos Españoles, Mestizos y Mulatos; dista una legua al S O de su Cabecera.

Tiene el mismo nombre, otro Pueblo de la Cabecera de Partido de Zitlala, y Alcaldía mayor de Chilapa, en el mismo Reyno, anexo del Curato de este, de quien dista 3 leguas, y 9 al S de su Cabecera; tiene 42 familias de Indios, incluso otro Pueblecillo que le está agregado.

AIANABE, a settlement of Indians of S. Carolina, situate on the shore of the river Buffle-noir.

AIAPANGO, the head settlement of the district of the akaldia mayor of Chaleo in Nueva Espana. It contains 100 families of Indians, and is annexed to the curacy of Amecaraeca, at two leagues to the s. of its capital.

AIAPATA, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Carabaya in Peru, and very opulent, on account of its silver mines. The sands on the banks of the rivers here have been known so richly impregnated with this metal, that lumps of it have been at different times picked up. It is the most considerable population in the province, and the temperature is so salutary, that it is very common to meet with persons of 90 years of age, and many also of 100.

AIAPEL, a town of the province and government of Antioquia, in the new kingdom of Granada, situate on the bank of a large lake or swamp of the same name, and which is formed from the waters of the rivers Cauca, San Jorge, and others. In its district are the lavaderos, or washing places for gold, of La Cruz, San Mateo, Thuansi, Can, Ure, Man, San Pedro, and La Soledad.

AIATASTO, a large river of the province and government of Tucuman, in the district and jurisdiction of the city of Salta, on the banks of which are some pasture grounds of the same name, upon which are fed 40,000 head of neat cattle, and 6000 of horses for breeding.

AIATEPEC, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of Atitlan, and alcaldia mayor of Villalta, in Nueva España. It contains 45 families of Indians, and is 17 leagues from its capital.

AIAUl, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Castro Virreyna in Peru, annexed to the curacy of Huaitara.

AIAUIRI, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Lamoa in Peru. In its vicinity are some forts, which were built by the Indians in the time of their gentilism, and now in a state of great dilapidation. There is a lake of warm water here, the bottom of which has never yet been found. The water always keeps at one height, so that it is presumed that it finds its way out through some subterraneous channel. There is also another warm

water spring at two leagues distance, which is very noxious, and, as it runs, has the property of petrifying, in like manner as the spring of water in Guancavelica.

Aiauiri, another settlement of the province and corregimiento of Yauyos in Peru.

AIAUTLA, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of the alcaldia mayor of Teutila in Nueva España, of a warm temperature, and inhabited by 100 Indian families, who support themselves by cultivating and selling the vaynilla plant. Nine leagues s. of its capital.

AICAROPA, a small river Of the province and government of Guayana, or Nueva Andalucia. It rises in the country of the Armocotos Indians, runs from e. to w. with a slight inclination to the s. and enters the Caura.

AICHES, a settlement of Indians of the province and government of Las Texas, in Nueva España, sitzate in the way which leads to Mexico.

AICIACHIA, a settlement of the missions which belonged to the Jesuits, in the province of Taraumara and kingdom of Nueva Vizcaya, 40 leagues w. s. w. of the town and real of the mines of Chiguagua.

AIECTIPAC, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of Yxteapan, and alcaldia mayor of Tlapa, in Nueva España. It contains 21 Indian families, and is three leagues e. of its head settlement.

AIENCAS, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Cuenca, in the kingdom of Quito, annexed to the curacy of Paccha.

AIGA, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Huailas in Peru.

AIGAME, a settlement and real of mines of the province and government of Sonora in Nueva Espana.

==AILES, a river of the province and government of Louisiana. It runs s, e. between the rivers Canot and Noyre, and empties itself into the Mississippi.

AIMARAEZ, a province and corregimiento of Peru, bounded n. w. and w. by the province of Andahuailas, of the bishopric of Guamanga, s. by Parinacocha of the same, s. e. by Ghumbivilcas, and e. by Cotabamba. It is 40 leagues in length from «. to s. and 26 in width from e. to ti). including in its figure on the w. side the last mentioned province. It js one of the most uneven soils in the kingdom, being full of lofty sierras and snowy mountains. It is on this account that its climate is very cold, excepting, however, in some vallies, where it is more temperate, and where, on some small sloping grounds, the inhabitants sow seed and grain, and cultivate fruit trees and cane plantations,

AIATASXO, Río caudaloso de la Provincia y Gobierno del Tucuman, en el distrito y jurisdicción de la Ciudad de Salta, a cuyas orillas hay una hacienda del mismo nombre, en que pacen mas de 40.000. cabezas de ganado vacuno, y 6.000 yeguas.

AIAUIRI, Pueblo de la Provincia y Corregimiento de Lampa, en el Perú: en sus inmediaciones hay algunas fortalezas del tiempo de los Gentiles, ya muy maltratadas, y un lago de agua caliente, cuyo fondo, no se ha podido hallar; siempre mantiene el agua en la misma altura, por cuya razón se cree que tenga algún deshague subterráneo: a dos leguas de el hay otro manantial de agua, también caliente, muy nociva, y al paso que corre se convierte en piedra, semejante a la que hay en Guancavelica.

Tiene el mismo nombre Pueblo de la Provincia y Corregimiento de Yauyos, también en el Perú.

AIAUTLA, Pueblo y Cabecera de Partido de la Alcaldía mayor de Teutila, en Nueva España, de temperamento caliente, habitado por 100 familias de Indios, que se ocupan en el beneficio y comercio de la Vaynilla, está 9 leguas al S de su Capital.

AICAROPA, Río pequeño de la Provincia y Gobierno de la ueva Andalucía, nace en el País de los Indios Arinacotos, corre del E. acia el O., con inclinación al N, y entra en el de Catira.

AICHES, Pueblo de Indios de la Provincia y Gobierno de los Texas, en Nueva España, situado en el cumino que va a México.

AICIACHIA, Pueblo de las Misiones, que tenian los Regulares de la Extinguida Compañía, en la Provincia de Taraumara y Reyno de Nueva Vizcaya, 40 leguas al O SO de la Villa y Real de Minas de Chiguagua.

AIECTIPAC, Pueblo de la Cabecera de Partido de Yxteapan y Alcaldía mayor de Tiapa, en Nueva España, tiene 21 familias de Indios, y está 3 leguas al E de su Cabecera.

AIENCAS, Pueblo de la Provincia y Corregimiento de Cuenca, en el Reyno de Quito, anexo al Curato de Paccha.

AIMARAEZ, Provincia y Corregimiento del Perú, confina por el NO y O con la de Andahuailas del Obispado de Guamanga: por el S con la de Parinacocha del mismo: por el SE con la de Chumbivilcas: y por el E con la de t Cotabamba, tiene de largo 40 leguas N S, y 16 de ancho E O; incluyendo en su figura por el O la última: es una de las mas fragosas del Reyno, llena de sierras altas y nevadas todo el año; por lo qual su temperamento es muy frío, a excepción de algunas quebradas, en que es mas templado, y donde en algunos pedazos cortos de laderas se hacen sementeras de granos, y cultivan árboles frutales y cañaverales, de que fabrican alguna azúcar; pasan por ella 3 rios que no le son de utilidad alguna, porque corren muy profundos, estos unidos forman el de Pachachaca, que entra en la de Abancay, para cuyos pasages tiene mas de 40 puentes de cuerdas y maderos: hay en esta Provincia innumerables vetas de oro y plata, que no se trabajan por la pobreza y poco espíritu de sus naturales, y solo de una u otra se saca alguna utilidad: en otros tiempos la dejaban grande, pero ya están aguadas quasi todas: se han descubierto minas de azogue, que está prohibido labrar: tiene poco ganado, y así no fabrican ropas de la tierra, a excepción de una especie de sobrecamas gruesas, que llaman Chuces: cogen en esta Provincia alguna grana, que llaman Macno; la unió al Imperio del Perú Capac Yupanqui V Emperador de los Incas: el idioma que hablan sus naturales, es el que mas comunmente se usa en todo el Reyno; fue la Capital de ella un Pueblo grande y bien dispuesto, que se llamaba Tintay, y hoy está despoblado por falta de agua, y por una peste, en que perecieron casi todos sus habitantes; los de toda la Provincia serán 15.000: tiene 50 Pueblos en su jurisdicción; su Corregidor tenia de repartimiento 86.100 pesos fuertes, pagando de alcavala 688 en cada un año.
