near the coast of Tierra Firme, opposite the Escu-
do de Veraguas. It is of a good temperature, fer-
tile, and abounding in cattle and fruits. It had in
it a settlement defended by two castles, called San-
tiago and Santa Teresa; which, together with the
town, were destroyed by an English pirate, John
Morgan, who took the island in 1665 ; and al-
though it was recovered in the same year by the
president of Panama and Colonel Don J uan Perez
de Guzman, it remained abandoned and desert.

until it unites itself with tlie Gonzanama, which
enters it on the s. side, in lat. S° 47' s. ; it then
turns its course to the xo. and afterwards to the
5 . w. and receives the tributary streams of the
rivers Quiros, Macara, and Pelingara ; all of
which enter it on the s. side. Being swelled with
these, it takes the name of Amotape, from the settle-
ment of this name, situate on its shore. Near its
mouth this river is called Colan, and it empties it-
self into the sea in the corregimiento and province
ofPiura. The countries which it laves are fertile
and beautiful, and its banks are covered with or-
chards and plantations of sugar-canes of the terri-
tory of Loxa. The climate here is very hot, and
in the valleys formed by this river the inhabitants
are much afflicted with the tertian fever ; its wa-
ters are generally very cold and unwliolesonic.

Está 29S gr. de long. y 12 y 30 min. de lat. sept.
Otra Isla pequeña cerca de la Costa del Brasil en la Provincia y Capitanía de San Vicente, tiene 8 leguas de largo N S habitada de algunos Indios y de unos pocos Portugueses: hay en ella un fuerte que Don Juan de la Cruz llama de San Joseph, citando a Anson: los Españoles, mandados por el Teniente General Don Pedro Ceballos, la tomaron el año de 1777: está en 27 gr. 6 min. de lat. aust.
Una Isla pequeña, situada al S de la Española o de Santo Domingo, inmediata a ésta enfrente del Pueblo de Higney. Un Valle en que hay también una pequeña población en el Nuevo Reyno de León, anexo al Curato de su Capital, de donde dista 3 leguas al Poniente: tiene 20 familias de vecindario, y produce solo legumbres y ganado cabrio. Otro Valle de la Provincia y Corregimiento de Moquehua en el Perú, rodeado de un río y de la Cordillera.

CATAMAIU, Río] grande y rápido de la Provincia y Gobierno de Loxa en el Reyno de Quito, llamado también de Chira en su salida al mar: nace del páramo o monte de la Sabanilla, y recogiendo las aguas de otros varios menores, corre del S al N hasta que se une con el de Gonzanama, que le entra por su parte austral en 3 gr. 47 min. de lat. aust. luego tuerce su curso al Poniente, y después al SO, recogiendo las aguas de los de Quiros, Macará y Pelingara, que todos entran en él por la parte austral; engrosado con éstos, toma el nombre de Amotape por el Pueblo de este nombre, situado a su orilla: cerca de su boca se llama de Colan, desembocando al mar en el Corregimiento y Provincia de Piura: baña hermosas y fértiles campiñas, y sus orillas estan cubiertas de huertos y plantaciones de cañas dulces del territorio de Loxa; su clima es muy cálido, y en los valles que forma, sujetos sus habitantes a la epidemia de tercianas: sus aguas están ordinariamente muy frias y son mal sanas: está su boca en 4 gr. 58 min. de lat. aust. | 338338
