page_0001mechoacan fr[ay] fran[cis]co de Mechuacan In the town of Tiripitio which is in the Crown of His Majesty and in the province of Mechuacan, there is a monastery of the order of our father St. Augustine, where four religious continually reside for the administration of the holy sacraments to the natives. At present, the said four reside [there]. Their prior is named Fray Francisco de Villafuerte, theologian, preacher and confessor of the Spaniards, and very good [in] the Tarascan language and very old in the land, of the age of more than fifty years. The other priests are also [fluent in] the Tarascan language, and one of them [in] the Mexican language. This town of Tiripitio has one thousand two hundred tribute-payers as its subjects, conformant to the last count, more or less. 512 — In the capital which is the same Tiripitio, five hundred and twelve tribute-payers are found. 114 — In one estate called Guajumbo which is one league away from the capital, one hundred and fourteen tribute-payers. 177 — In the third estate called Cuicco which is three-quarters of a league away from the capital, one hundred and seventy-seven tribute-payers. 171 — The fourth estate called Teteyco, dedicated to Saint Michael, which is two leagues away from the capital with other subjects in the same, has one hundred and seventy-one tribute-payers. 145 — The fifth estate called Coringuaco with Vyzanban [?] which is two leagues from the capital, has one hundred and forty-five tribute-payers. 27 — The sixth estate called Tupatoco which is three leagues from the capital has twenty-seven tribute-payers. 24 — The seventh estate called Chicaquaco which is one league from its capital has 24 tribute-payers. 30 — The eighth estate called Ichaqueo which is three leagues from its capital has 30 tribute-payers. They are found for confession in this town with its estates, more than four thousand, because they are all accustomed to confess every year when they reach the age of discretion. All the natives receive communion, no more and no less than the Spaniards, and the sacraments are administered to them with great solemnity and [reverence].
