Agustin, San, a river of the province and government of Antioquia, in the new kingdom of Granada. It runs from s. to n. and afterwards, with a slight inclination to the w. enters the river S. Juan, of the province of Choco.

AHOME, a nation of Indians, who inhabit the shores of the river Zuaque, in the province of Cinaloa, and who are distant four leagues from the sea of California : they were converted to the Catholic faith by father Andres de Rivas, a Jesuit. Their country consists of some extensive and fertile plains, and they are by nature superior to the other Indians of Nueva España. Moreover, their Heathenish customs do not partake so much of the spirit of barbarism. They abhorred polygamy, and held virginity in the highest estimation : and thus, by way of distinction, unmarried girls wore

a small shell suspended to their neck, until the day of their nuptials, when it was taken off by the bridegroom. Their clothes were decent, composed of wove cotton, and'they had a custom of bewailing their dead for a whole year, night and morning, with an apparently excessive grief. They are gentle and faithful towards the Spaniards, with whom they have continued in peace and unity from the time of their first subjection. The principal settlement is of the same name, and lies at the mouth of the river Fuerte, on the coast of the gulph of California,* having a good, convenient, and well sheltered port.

Ahorcados, some small islands or points on the coast of the S. sea, in the district of Santa Elena, of the province and government of Guayaquil, close to the mouth of the river Colonche.

AHUACATES, Santa Maria de, a branch of the head settlement of the district and alcaldia mayor of Cuernavaca in Nueva España.

AHUACATLAN, Santa Maria de, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of San Francisco del Talle, and alcaldia mayor of Zultepec, in Nueva España. It is of a cold temperature, inhabited by 51 families of Indians, and distant three leagues s. of its head settlement.

Ahuacatlan (Zochicoatlan), another settlement of’the head settlement and alcaldia mayor of Zochicoatlan in Nueva España. It is of a cold temperature, situate on a small level plain, surrounded by hills and mountains. It contains 13 families of Indians, and is seven leagues to the n. of its capital.

Ahuacatlan, with the dedicatory title of San Juan, the head settlement of the district of the alcaldia mayor of Zacatlan in Nueva España. Its inhabitants are composed of 450 families of Indians, and 60 of Spaniards, Mustees, and Mulattoes, including the settlements of the district. Five leagues from its capital, and separated by a mountainous and rugged road, as also by a very broad river, whose waters, in the winter time, increase to such a degree as to render all communication between the above places impracticable.

Ahuacatlan, another, of the head settlement of the district of Olinala, and alcaldia mayor of Tlapa, in the above kingdom. It contains 160 families of Indians, who trade in chia^ (a white medicinal earth), and grain, with which its territory abounds. It lies n, w. of its head settlement.

Otro Un Río de la Provincia y Gobierno de Antioquía, en Nuevo Reyno de Granada, corre del S al N, y con alguna inclinación después al O, entra en el de S. Juan de la Provincia y Gobierno del Chocó.

Otro Una Isla pequeña del golfo de California o Mar Rojo de Cortés, situado en lo mas interior de él, arrimada a la Costa de Nueva España, delante de la Bahía de San Juan Baptista.

AHOME Nación de Indios, que habita las orillas del río Zuaque, en la Provincia de Cinaloa, distantes 4 leguas del mar de California: fue reducida a la fe católica por el P. Andrés de Rivas, Jesuita ocupa unas grandes llanuras y terrenos fértiles, son de mejor presencia que los demás Indios de Nueva España, y de menos bárbaras costumbres en su gentilidad, repugnaban la poligamia, y conservaban con aprecio la virginidad, trayendo por distintivo las doncellas una conchita colgada al cuello hasta el dia que se casaban, que se la quitaba el novio: vestían honestamente con texidos de algodón, y lloraban durante un año la muerte de sus difuntos con exceso al anochecer y al amanecer: son dóciles y fieles con los Españoles, con quienes han conservado paz y unión desde que se redugeron: el Pueblo principal tiene su mismo nombre, y está a la boca del río Fuerte, en la Costa del golfo de California, con un buen Puerto muy cómodo y abrigado de los vientos.

AHORCADOS, Punta de los, en la Costa de la laguna grande de los Patos de la Provincia y Capitanía del Rey en el Brasil. Tienen el mismo nombre unos Islotes o Farallones de la Costa de la mar del Sur, en el partido de Santa Elena, Provincia y Gobierno de Guayaquil, junto a la boca del río de Colonche.

AHUACATEPEC, San Nicolás de, Pueblo de la misma Cabezera y Alcaldía mayor que el antecedente.

AHUACATLAN Santa María del Pueblo de la Cabecera de Partido de San Francisco del Valle y Alcaldía mayor de Zultepec, en Nueva España; es de temperamento frío, habitado por 51 familias de Indios, y distante 3 leguas al S de su Cabecera.

Otro con la advocación de San Juan, Cabecera de Partido de la Alcaldía mayor de Zacatlán, en Nueva España ; su vecindario se compone de 450 familias de Indios y 60 de Españoles, Mestizos y Mulatos, incluyendo los Pueblos de su distrito, está 5 leguas de su Capital, de un camino montuoso y áspero, mediando un caudaloso río, cuyas aguas en Invierno crecen tanto que imposibilitan el tránsito de una parte a otra.

Otro de la Cabecera de Partido de Olinalá y Alcaldía mayor de Tlapa, en el mismo Reyno, tiene 116 familias de Indios, que comercian en Chía y Grana, de que abunda su territorio; está al NO de su cabecera.

Carlos, San, a small island of the gulf of California, or Mar Roxo de Cortes, in the interior of the same, and very close upon the coast.

Carlos, San, a river of the island of Guadalupe, which runs nearly due n. e. and enters the sea in the bay of the Great Cul de Sac.

Carlos, San, a settlement (with the surname of Real) of the province and government of Buenos Ayres ; situate on the shore of the river La Plata, near the colony of Sacramento, which belonged to the Portuguese. In its vicinty, on the n. n. e. part, there is a lake of very good sweet water.

Carmelo, Sierras del, a cordillera of very lofty mountains of the province of California ; they run to the sea-shore from the sierra of the Enfado, as far as the cape of San Lucas.

CARMEN, a river of the province and colony of Surinam, in the part of Guayana possessed by the Dutch. It rises in the sierra of Rinocote, runs from w. to e. and gathering the waters of many others, enters in a large body into the Mazarroni.

Carmen, a settlement of the province and government of Cartagena ; situate in the district of the mountains of Marca, between those of San Jacinto and San Francisco de Asis. It is one of those new settlements that were founded by the Govemor Don Juan Pimienta in 1776.

Una Bahía de la Costa de la Florida, en la parte occidental de ella, 45 leguas de la Sonda de la Tortuguilla, en 284 grad. 30 min. de long. y 2 7.... 10 de lat. Una Isleta pequeña del Golfo de California o mar Roxo de Cortés, en lo interior de él y muy arrimada a la Costa. Un río de la Isla de Guadalupe, que corre casi al NE, y sale al mar en la Bahía de Cul de Sac grand. Un Pueblo, y con sobrenombre de Real, de la Provincia y Gobierno de Buenos Ayres, situado a orilla del río de la Plata, cerca de la Colonia del Sacramento, que tuvieron los Portugueses; en su inmediación a la parte del N NE hay una laguna de agua dulce muy buena. Una Isla del Estrecho de Magallanes, entre el monte del Pan de Azúcar y el Cabo Galand de la Costa del N. Un valle en la Provincia y Gobierno del Tucuman, que es muy fértil en vino, trigo, maiz, algarroba, brea y mucha caza; los naturales de él fueron los que mas dieron que hacer a los Españoles en la conquista de esta Provincia. Un Pueblo y Fuerte de la Isla de San Cristóval, una de las Antillas. Otro de la Isla de Cuba, situado en la Costa del N en la Punta de Tierra o Pan de Matanzas. Otro de la Provincia y Gobierno de Maracaibo, situado en la Isía Páxaírá a orilla de la gran laguna. Otro de la Provincia y Pais de las Amazonas, reducción de las Misiones que tenían en ella los Regulares de la Compañía; está entre los ríos Araucaso y Shiquita, en el territorio de las Indios Cahumaris. Otro de la Provincia y Gobierno de Nicaragua y Reyno de Goatemala, situado a orilla del río de S. Juan 6 del desaguadero. Unas sierras o montañas llamadas de Don Carlos, en la Provincia y Capitanía del Rey, en el Brasil; corren paralelas a la sierra de los Difuntos, en la extremidad de la Costa que forma la boca del río de la Plata.

CARLOSAMA, Pueblo grande de Indios de la Provincia y Corregimiento de Pasto s, en el Reyno de Quito, en la orilla austral del río de su nombre; su terreno es fértilísimo; pero de clima muy frío, y las calles quasi siempre impracticables; está al O NO del de Ipiales, y al E NE del de Cumbal.

CARLUTAS, Río] de la Provincia y Capitanía de río Grande, en el Brasil; nace cerca de la Costa, corfe al S SE, y sale al mar entre el de Genibabá y el río Grande.

CARMA, Pueblo de la Provincia y Corregimiento de Porco, en el Perú, anexo al Curato de Porco.

CARMELO, Sierras del, Cordillera de montes muy altos de la Provincia de California ; corren a orilla del mar desde la sierra del Enfado hasta el Cabo de San Lucas.

CARMEN, Río] de la Provincia y Colonia de Surinam, en la parte de la Guayana que poseen los Holandeses; nace en la sierra de Rinocote, corre del O al E, y recogiendo las aguas de otros muchos entra muy caudaloso en el do Mazarroni. Tiene el mismo nombra un Pueblo de la Provincia y Gobierno de Cartagena, situado en el Partido de las montañas de María, entre los de San Jacinto y San Francisco de Asis; es uno de los de las nuevas poblaciones que fundó el Gobernador Don Juan Pimienta el año de 1776. Otro en el mismo Reyno, situado cerca de un arroyo y a orilla del río Tocantines, a la banda del E, no distante del arrayai de San Feliz. Una Isla grande del Golfo de California o mar Roxo de Cortés, cerca de la Costa, entre las de San Ildefonso y de Agua Verde. Una Villa de la Provincia y Capitanía del Espíritu Santo, en el Brasil, situada a la orilla y Cabecera de un río que le da el nombre.

(Catabaw Indians, a small tribe who have one town called Catabaw, situate on the river of that name, hit. 44° S9' n, on the boundary line between N. and S. Carolina, and contains about 450 inhabitants, of which about 150 are fighting men. They are the only tribe w hich resides in the state ; 144,000 acres of land . were granted them by the proprietary government. These are the remains of a forrnidalile nation, the bravest and most generous enemy thp Six Nations had, butthey have degenerated sincp they have been surrounded by the whites.)

CATABUHU, a river of the province and country of Las Amazonas: it rises near the equinoctial line, runs s. e. and enters the Rio Negro.

CATACACHI, a settlement of the province and corregimiehto of Caxamarca in Peru ; annexed to the curacy of Santa Cruz, in which there is a stream of water Avhich distils from some crevices, and deposits in its bed a sort of white stone or crystalline substance, which they call catachi^ and which being dissolved in water, is accounted a specific in the flux.

CATACUMBO, a river of the province and government of Maracaibo, which rises to the e. of the city of Las Palmas, and runs e. increasing its stream by many others which flow into it, until it unites itself with the Sulia, to enter the lake of Maracaibo; where, at its mouth, it extends itself and forms a large pool of water called La Laguneta.

CATACUMBO, Río] de la Provincia y Gobierno de Maracaibo: nace al E de la Ciudad de las Palmas, y sigue corriendo al mismo rumbo, aumentándose su caudal con el de otros que recoge hasta unirse con el de Sulia, para entrar en la laguna de Maracaibo, en cuya boca se extiende y forma un rebalso de aguas muy grande que llaman la laguneta.

CATAGANE, Pueblo de la Nueva Francia o Canadá, situado en la Costa del lago superior junto a la punta de Chagovamigon.

CATAGUAR, Pueblo de la Provincia y Gobierno de Cumaná, situado al E de la Ciudad de Cariaco.

CATALANA, Isla del Golfo de California o mar Roxo de Cortes, situada cerca de la Costa entre las de Monserrat y de Santa Cruz.

SANTA CATALINA, Pueblo de la Cabecera y Alcaldía mayor de Tezcoco en Nueva España, agregado al de nuestra Señora de la Purificación: tiene 132 familias de Indios. Tiene este mismo nombre otro Pueblo en la Cabecera y partido de Tepaxtlán y Alcaldía mayor de Cuernavaca en Nueva España. Otro de la Cabecera y Alcaldía mayor de Tepeaca en el mismo Reyno. Otro con el distintivo de Mártyr en la Cabecera y Alcaldía mayor de Zacatlán en el mismo Reyno. Otro de la Cabecera de Teutalpan y Alcaldía mayor de Zacatlán en el mismo Reyno. Otro pequeño de la Cabecera y Alcaldía mayor de Juxtlahuaca en el mismo Reyno. Otro de la Cabecera de Tantoyuca y Alcaldía mayor de Tampico en el mismo Reyno: es de temperamento cálido, y tiene 8 o familias de Indios, dedicados al cultivo de la tierra, está 10 leguas al Oriente de su Cabecera. Otro de la Provincia y Corregí miento de Omasuyos en el Perú, anexo al Curato de Huaicho. Otro de la Provincia y Corregimiento de Canta en el Perú, anexo al Curato de Parí: tiene unos baños medicinales de agua caliente.
