ACATICO, a settlement of the head settlement and alcaldía mayor of Cuquio, in Nueva España.

ACATLAN, a settlement and capital of the alcaldía mayor of this name. It is of a mild temperature, and its situation is at the entrance of the Misteca Baxa. It contains 850 families of Indians, and 20 of Spaniards and Mustees. In its vicinity are some excellent saltgrounds, in which its commerce chiefly consists. The jurisdiction of this alcaldía, which contains four other head settlements of the district, is fertile and pleasant, abounding in flowers, fruits, all kinds of pulse and seeds, and is well watered. They have here large breeds of goats, which they slaughter chiefly for the skin and the fat, salting down the flesh, and sending it to La Puebla and other parts to be sold. In its district are many cultivated lands. It is 55 leagues leagues to the E S E of Mexico. Long. 275° 10' W Lat. 19° 4' N.

Andres, in the head settlement and alcaldía mayor of Xalapa, in the same kingdom, situate on a clayey spot of ground, of a cold moist temperature, rendered fertile by an abundance of streams, which in a very regular manner water the lands; although,it being void of mountains and exposed to the N winds, the fruits within its neighourhood do not come to maturity. It contains 180 Indian families, including those of the new settlement, which was established at a league's distance to the S of its head settlement, and which is called San Miguel de las Aguastelas. Acatlan is a league and a half distant from its head settlement.

another settlement, having the dedicatory title of San Pedro, belonging to the head settlement of Malacatepec and alcaldía mayor of Nexapa, in the same kingdom. It contains 80 Indian families, who trade in wool and in the fish called bobo, quantities of which are found in a large river which runs close by the settlement, and which are a great source of emolument to them. ACATLAZINGO, Santa Maria de, a settlement of the head settlement of Xicula, and alcaldía mayor of Nexapa, situate in a plain that is surrounded on all sides by mountains. It contains 67 Indian families, who employ themselves in the culture of the cochineal plant.

ACATULA, a settlement of the province and government of Venezuela, situate on the shore of the river Guasqui, to the E of the city of Coro.

ACAXEE, a nation of Indians of the province of Topia. It is well peopled, and was converted to the Catholic faith by the father Hernando de Santaren, and others of the abolished society of the Jesuits, in 1602. They are docile, of good dispositions and abilities. In the time of their idolatry, they used to bend the heads of their dead with their bodies and knees together, and in this posture inter them in a cave, or under a rock, giving them provisions for the journey which they fancied them about to make ; also laying by them a bow and arrows for their defence. Should an Indian woman happen to have died in childbed, the infant was put to death ; for they used to say, it was the cause of her death. These Indians were once induced by a sorcerer to make an insurrection, but it was quelled by the governor of the province, Don Francisco de Ordinola, in the year 1612.

ACAXETE, Santa María de, the head, settlement of the district of the alcaldía mayor of Tepcaca, situate on the slope of the noted sierra of Tlascala. It is of a cold and dry temperature, contains seven Spanish families, 10 of Mustees and Mulattoes, and 176 of Mexican Indians. In its vicinity is a reservoir, formed of hewn stone, which serves at once to catch the waters as they come down from the sierra, and to conduct them to Tepcaca, three leagues N N W of its capital.

ACATICO, Pueblo de la Cabecera y Alcaldía mayor de Cuquio en Nueva España.

ACATLAN, Pueblo y Capital de la Alcaldía mayor de este nombre, es de temperamento templado: y su situación a la entrada de la Misteca baxa; tiene 85o familias de Indios, y 20 de Españoles y Mestizos. En su inmediación hay muy buenas Salinas, en que consiste su principal comercio. La jurisdicción de esta Alcaldía, que contiene otros quatro Pueblos cabeceras de Partido, es fértil y amena, abundante de flores, frutas, legumbres y semillas, pollas aguas que la riegan; cría mucho ganado cabrío para las matanzas, en que principalmente se utilizan de la piel y sebo, salando las carnes que llevan a vender a la Puebla y otras partes. Tiene en su distrito muchas haciendas de labor. Está 55 leguas al E SE de México. Longitud 15 5 10, lat. 194.

Otro Otro Pueblo hay del mismo nombre con la advocación de S. Andrés, en la Cabecera y Alcaldía mayor de Xalapa, en el mismo Reyno, situado en un Barrizal, de temperamento frío y húmedo, que fertiliza la abundancia de pequeños arroyos, que riegan con igualdad la tierra, que por estar desabrigada de montes, y al descubierto de los vientos N no logran en sazón los frutos de los árboles que pueblan su distrito: tiene 180 familias de Indios con los que habitan otra Población nueva, que hicieron una legua de su Cabecera por el S, llamada San Miguel de las Aguastelas. Está legua y media al N NE de aquella.

Otro Otro con la advocación de San Pedro, que es de la Cabecera de Malacatepec, y Alcaldía mayor de Nexapa en el mismo Reyno. Tiene 80 familias de Indios que comercian en algodón, y en la pesca de Bobos que hacen en un caudaloso río que corre inmediato al Pueblo, y es de lo que sacan mayor utilidad. Está 4 leguas al N de su Capital.

Otro Otro en la Cabecera de Zitlala de la misma Alcaldía y Reyno. Tiene 198 familias de Indios, y está situado legua y media al N de su Cabecera.

Otro Otro en la Cabecera y Alcaldía mayor de Sentipac, del mismo Reyno; es de temperamento frío; tiene 42 familias de Indios, y está 15 leguas al NE de su Capital.

Otro Otro en la Cabecera de Atotonilco, y Alcaldía mayor de Tulanzingo, en el mismo Reyno. Tiene 115 familias de Indios, y un Convento de Religiosos de San Agustin, dista 2 leguas al N de su Cabecera.

ACATLAZINGO, Santa María de, Pueblo de la Cabecera de Xicula, y Alcaldía mayor de Nexapa, situado en un llano rodeado por todas partes de cerros; tiene 67 familias de Indios que se exercítan en el beneficio y cultivo de la Grana.

ACATULA, Pueblo de la Provincia y Gobierno de Venezuela, situado a la orilla del río Guasqui, al E de la Ciudad de Coro.

ACAXEE, nación de Indios de la Provincia de Topía: es numerosa, y reducidos todos a la fe católica, por el Padre Hernando de Santaren y otros de la extinguida Compañía, el año de 1602. Son dóciles, bien inclinados e ingeniosos. Era tiempo de su idolatría enterraban sus difuntos doblándolos de modo que les juntaban las rodillas con la boca; y así los metían en una cueva o debaxo de una peña, poniéndoles comida para el viage que creían iban a hacer, con arco y flechas para defenderse. Quando moria de parto alguna India, mataban a la criatura, porque decían que era la causa. Estos Indios se sublevaron inducidos de un famoso hechicero 5 pero los reduxo el Gobernador de la Provincia Don Francisco de Ordiñola, el año de 1612.

ACAXETE, Santa María de, Pueblo y Cabecera de Partido de la Alcaldía mayor de Tepeaca, situado en Urrepecho de la eminente sierra de Tlascala. Es de temperamento frío y seco: tiene 7 familias de Españoles, 10 de Mestizos y Mulatos, y 176 de Indios Mexicanos. En su inmediación hay una caxa o arca de agua de piedra de cantería, en que se recogen las que baxan de la sierra, y se conducen a Tepeaca. Está 3 leguas al N N O de su Capital.

ACAXUCHITLAN the head settlement of the alcaldía mayor of Tulazingo, to the N E. It contains 406 Indian families, and is a curacy of the bishopric of La Puebla de los Angeles. Distant four leagues to the E of its capital.

ACAYUCA, the alcaldía mayor of Nueva España, and of the province of Goazacoalco. Its jurisdiction is very extended, and consists, for the most part, of places of a hot and moist temperature, but so fertile is it that it gives annually four crops of maize; and as there is no demand for this production in the other provinces, it follows, of course, that the Indians here are little given to industry. Indeed the ground never requires the plough, and the whole of their labours during the seedtime consist merely in smoothing the surface of the mountains, and in scratching up the ground with a pointed stick. It is at times infested by locusts, which destroy the plants and crops ; and having never been able to find a remedy against this evil, the inhabitants had recourse to the protection of the virgin of La Conception, which is revered in the head settlement of the district of the Chichimecas ; and it is said that, owing to her mediatory influence, the plague has been thought to diminish. This province is watered by the abundant river of the Goazacoalco. The settlements of this alcaldía are, Xocoteapa, Macayapa, Menzapa, Molocan, Theimanquillo, Tinantitlan, Chinameca, Zoconusco, Olutla, Otcapa, Pochutla, Ostitan, Cozolcaque, Ixhuatla, Macatepeque.

another, the capital of the above, situate on the coast of the N. sea. Its inhabitants are composed of 30 families of Spaniards, 296 of Indians, and 70 of Mustees and Mulattoes. It lies a little more than 100 leagues S E of Mexico. Lat. 17° 53' N Long. 94° 46' 30" W.

another, settlement in the alcaldía mayor of Pachuca, in the kingdom of Nueva España, annexed to the curacy of Tezayuca, and containing 100 Indian families.

Acacingo, the head settlement of the district of the alcaldía mayor of Tepcaca, situate in a plain of a mild temperature, and watered by two streams which run close to all the houses of the settlement, to the great comfort of the inhabitants. In the middle of the above plain there is a beautiful fountain, a convent of the religious order of St. Francis, a very ancient building, and some other buildings, which have been erected since the conquest of the country. The parish church is a piece of the most ancient architecture. The inhabitants are composed of 150 families of Spaniards, 104 of Mustees, 31 of Mulattoes, and 700 of Indians; 3 1/4 leagues E to the NE of its capital.

ACAZUTLA, a port of the S sea, on the coast of the province of the alcaldía mayor of Zuchitepec, in the kingdom of Guatemala, between the point of Los Remedios, and the settlement of Guapaca. [Lat. 14° 42' N Long. 90° 3'.]

ACCHA, a settlement of the province and corregimiento of Chilques and Masques in Peru, situate on the skirt of a mountain, which has a prominence, seeming as though it were about to fall upon the settlement. This mountain is constantly dwindling away without any assignable cause. Lat. 13° 19 s. Long. 71° 13' W

Aceites, a river of the province and government of Caraccas, in the kingdom of Tierra Firme. It rises in the mountains, and enters the Orituco.

[ACCOCESAWS. The ancient town and principal place of residence of these Indians is on the W side of Colorado of Rio Rouge, about 200 miles S W of Nacogdoches, but they often change their place of residence for a season : being near the bay, they make great use of fish, oysters &c.; kill a great many deer, which are the largest and fattest in the province ; and their country is universally said to be inferior to no part of the province in soil, growth of timber, goodness of water, and beauty of surface; they have a language peculiar to themselves, but have a mode of communication by dumb signs, which they all understand: number about 80 men. Thirty or forty years ago, the Spaniards had a mission here, but broke it up, or moved it to Nacogdoches. They talk of resettling it, and speak in the highest terms,of the country.]

[ACCOMACK County, in Virginia, is situated on a peninsula, bounded N by Maryland, E by the ocean, and on the W by Chesapeak bay, and contains 13.959 inhabitants, including 4.262 slaves.]

ACAXUCHITLAN, Pueblo y Cabecera de Partido de la alcaldía mayor de Tulazingo en N E: tiene 406 familias de Indios, y es Curato del Obispado de La Puebla de los Angeles, distante 4 leguas al E de su capital.

ACAYUCA, Alcaldía mayor de Nueva España, y de la Provincia de Goazacoalco: es de dilatada jurisdicción, y por la mayor parte de temperamento cálido y húmedo; pero tan fértil que da anualmente quatro cosechas de maíz; y como no tiene salida en las demás jurisdicciones, de ahí proviene que los Indios sean poco aplicados al trabajo; pues solo con arrasar los montes, y horadar la tierra a punta de estaca hacen sus siembras, sin gastar arado ni otro equivalente. Padece la calamidad de que a tiempos se inunda de langostas, que destruyen las plantas y sementeras; y no habiéndose hallado remedio a este daño, ocurrieron sus naturales al amparo de la Virgen de la Concepción, que se venera en la Cabecera del Partido de los Chichimecas; con cuyo favor es fama que quando sacan en Procesión la Imagen se disminuye la epidemia. Riega a esta Provincia el caudaloso Río de Goazacoalco. La capital tiene el mismo nombre: está situada en la Costa de la mar del N. Su vecindario se compone de 30 familias de Españoles, 296 de Indios, y 70 de Mestizos y Mulatos. Está poco mas de 100 leguas al SE de México. Longitud 278 25. Latitud 19 20.

Juan de, Pueblo y Cabecera de Partido de la alcaldía mayor de Tepeaca, situado en un llano de temperamento templado, que riegan dos arroyos fertilizándolo; de cuyo beneficio logran casi todas las casas, introduciéndolos en ella. Tiene en medio de su gran Plaza una hermosa fuente, un Convento de Religiosos de San Francisco, obra antigua, y de los primeros que se fabricaron después de la conquista. La Iglesia Parroquial es de primorosa arquitectura: y su vecindario se compone de 150 familias de Españoles, 104 de Mestizos, 31 de Mulatos y 700 de Indios. Está 3 leguas al E, y un quarto al N E de su capital.

ACAZUTLA, Puerto de la Mar del S, en la Costa de la Provincia y alcaldía mayor de Zuchitepec en el Reyno de Guatemala entre la punta de Los Remedios y el Pueblo de Guapaca.

ACCHA, Pueblo de la Provincia y Corregimiento de Chilques y Masques en el Perú, situado a la falda de un cerro que tiene un formidable crestón amenazando ruina, y parece que está al caer sobre el Pueblo, el qual se va hundiendo cada dia insensiblemente, sin haberse podido averiguar la causa.

anti government of Darien, near the n. coast, and thus "called from an eagle Avitli two heads, which was caught here in 1608, and which Avas sent to the queen, Doha Maria-Ana of Austria, mother of Philip III. At its skirt is a bay, or swampy ground, which is round, and has a very narroAV inlet. Forty-five leagues from Cartagena.

Aguila (point), a point or cape of the larger island of the Malvinas or Falkland isles ; thus named from having been discovered by the French frigate, the Aguila, or Eagle. It is one of those whith form tlie great bay or port.

AGUILUSCO, a settlement of the head settlement of the district of Arantzan, and alcaldia mayor of Valladolid, in the province and bishopric of Mechoacan. It contains 32 families of Indians, who employ themselves in sowing seed, cutting Avood, manufacturing vessels of fine earth en-Avare, and saddle-trees for riding.

AGUIRRE, a river of the province and government of Venezuela. It rises by the side of the city of Niura, runs s. passes through the town of San Carlos, and enters the Sarara.

AGUJA, Point of the, on the coast of Tierra Firme, and of the province and government of Santa Marta, between this city and Cape Chichibacoa. It is the part of land which projects farthest into the sea.

AGUR, Francisco, a settlement of the province and captainship of Espiritu Santo in Brazil, situate near the coast and the bay of Espiritu Santo,

AGUSTIN, San, a capital city of the province and government of E. Florida, situate on the e. coast, in a peninsula, or narrow strip of land. It has a good port, which was discovered by Admiral Pedro Menendes de Aviles, on St. Augus-. tin’s day in the year 1565, which was his reason for giving the place this title, which has, however, been tAvice changed. He also built here a good castle for its defence. The city has a very good parish church, and a convent of the Franciscan order; and, as far as relates to its spiritual concerns, it is subject to the bishop of Cuba, who has at various times proposed the erection of an abbey, but has not obtained his wish, although it had been approved by the council of the Indies.

It has two hospitals, one for the garrison troops, and another for the community ; it has also an hermitage, Avith the dedicatory title of Santa Barbara. It was burnt by Francis Drake in 1586; by Captain Davis, Avith the Bucaniers, in 1665 ; but it was immediately afterwards rebuilt. In 1702 it Avas besieged by the English, under the command of Colonel Moore, who, failing in his attempts to take the castle, which Avas defended by the governor, Don Joseph de Zuniga, exhibited his revenge by burning and destroying the town. In 1744 the English returned to the siege, under the command of General Oglethorp, who was equally unsuccessful, in as much as it w^as most valiantly defended by the governor, Don Manuel de Montiano, who defied the bombardment of the enemy. This fort has a curtain of 60 toises long ; the parapet is nine feet ; and the terrace, or horizontal surface of the rampart, is 20 feet high, with good bomb-proof casemates, and mounted Avith 50 pieces of cannon, having also, on the exterior, an excellent covered way. The city, although it is encompassed by a wall, is not strong, and its defence consists in 10 projecting angles. It was ceded, Avith the whole of the province, to the English, by the King ofSpain, in the peace of Versailles, in 1762 ; and it remained in their possession till 1783, when it was restored by the treaty of Paris. The breakers at the entrance of the harbour have formed two channels, whose bars have eight feet of water each. Long. 81° 40'. Lat. 29° 58'.

Agustin, San, a settlement and real of mines, of the province of Tarauraara, in the kingdotli of Nueva Vizcaya, which was formerly a population of some consequence, and wealthy withal, from the richness of its mines, Avhich -have lately fallea into decay, and thereby entailed poverty upon the inhabitants. It is 26 leagues s. of the town of S, Felipe de Chiguagua.

Una punta o cabo de la isla mayor de las Maluinas, llamada así por haberla descubierto la fragata francesa el Aguila; es una de las que forman la gran Bahía o Puerto

AGUILUSCO, Pueblo de la Cabezera de Partido y Alcaldía mayor de Tala, en Nueva España, situado al N de aquella.

AGUIRAN, San Mateo de, Pueblo de la Cabezera de Partido de Arantzan y Alcaldía mayor de Valladolid, en la Provincia y Obispado de Mechoacan ; tiene 32 familias de Indios que se ocupan en el cultivo de las semillas, labrar maderas, fabricar loza y hacer fustes dt sillas para montar.

AGUIRRE, Río de la Provincia y Gobierno de Venezuela, nace al lado de la Ciudad de Nirúa, corre al S, pasa por la Villa de S. Carlos, y entra en el de Sarara.

Tienen el mismo nombre unos potreros de criar ganado, en la Provincia y Corregimiento de Coquimbo, del Reyno de Chile, entre los rios de Ramos y de Mamas.

AGUJA, Punta de la, en la Costa de Tierra Firme y Provincia y Gobierno de Santa Marta ; entre. esta Ciudad y el Cabo de Chichibacoa; es la parte de tierra que sale mas al mar.

Tiene el mismo nombre, otra en la Costa de la mar del S y Provincia y Corregimiento de Piura en el Peru.

AGUR, Francisco, Pueblo de la Provincia y Capitanía]] del Espíritu Santo, en el Brasil, situado cerca de la Costa y de la Bahía del Espíritu Santo.

AGUSTIN, San, Ciudad Capital de la Provincia y Gobierno de la Florida, situada en la Costa Oriental de ella, en una Península o lengua de tierra, con un buen Puerto que descubrió el Almirante Pedro Menern dea de Aviles, el dia de S. Agustín, el año de 1565 por cuya razón le dio este nombre a la Población, que fundó con un buen Castillo para su defensa; pero ha sido mudada dos veces: tiene muy buena Iglesia Parroquial, y un Convento de Religiosos de San Francisco, sujeto en lo espiritual al Obispo de Ouba, que ha propuesto varias veces la erección de una Abadía; pero no ha tenido efecto, aunque fue aprobada por el Consejo de Indias: dos Hospitales, uno para la Tropa del presidio, y otra para el vecindario, y una Hermita con la advocación de Santa Bárbara: Francisco Drack la quemó el año de 1586: el Capitán Bavis con los Bucaniers, en 1665; pero se reedificó inmediatamente: el de 170a la sitiaron los Ingleses, mandados por el Coronel Moore, que no pudiendo tomar el Castillo, defendido por el Gobernador, Don Joseph de Zúñiga, se vengaron en quemar y destruir la Población: el de 1744 volvieron a sitiarla con el General Oglethorp, que tampoco logró tomarlo, porque la defendió valerosamente su Gobernador Don Manuel de Montiano, sufriendo el bombardeo de los enemigos; esta Fortaleza tiene una cortina de 60 toesas de largo, el parapeto es de 9 pies, y el terraplén de 10 de alto, con buenas casamatas a prueba de bomba r y guarnecido con 50 cañones, y en lo exterior muy buencamino cubierto: la Ciudad, aunque está amurallada, no es muy fuerte, y su defensa consiste en 10 ángulos salientes: fue cedida con toda la Provincia a los Ingleses por el Rey de España, en la Paz de Versalles, el año de 1762, y la han poseído hasta el de 1783, que la volvieron a restituir por el Tratado de Páris. Longitud 298 30, latitud 30.

Tiene el mismo nombre un Pueblo y Real de Minas de la Provincia de Taraumara, en el Reyno del Nueva Vizcaya, que fue en otro tiempo Población de crecido vecindario, y muy rica por la opulencia de sus minas, las quales han venido a mucha decadencia, y con ellas el Pueblo: está 26 leguas al S de la Villa de S. Felipe de Chiguagua.
