Terrell to "Lewis", July 14, 1895

ReadAboutContentsHelp
Draft copy of letter from Terrell to a friend with the (last?) name Lewis, apparently based in Austin, in which he comments on both his interest in Trojan antiquities and the political situation in Turkey, and talks about personal and family matters. The scan seems to be missing page 7, which creates a significant gap in sense between page 6 and page 8.

at the expense of all congenial companionship. I feel sure she could be contented from a few months here, even if she did not compete with others in their expensive enjoyments, that at last mean nothing of good.

In polatics{sic}, as in nature, a lull follows a storm; so now, a mysterious secrecy shrouds all diplomacy. Europe is awaiting a report from Japan, which will not be here before next spring. We have had no real winter yet -- no ice -- no frost -- pears, green peas, cantelopes etc abundant yet, but grapes grow scarce.

I have had two marked diplomatic victories in the last few days 1 -- An Iredi, direct from the Sultan, requiring that a Turkish Officer who struck Mr. Hubbard (a Missionary) in the face, (way over near Sivas,) should go to the consul and apologise, and then be brought here for punishment. 2 -- An Acting Governor who invaded the domicil{sic} of Mr. Lee, (another Missionary,) to be reproved and removed, and a note from the Sublime Porte expressing regret for both incidents.

But I feel annoyed -- for while performing the four three horse bareback act, + pleasing myself, the Government -- protecting the Missionaries, and preserving

clout(?) in Massachusetts and in a Connecticut news paper. What miserable fools! For they should know that in times like these, the favor of a Sultan means wealth if one were base enough to betray his trust + accept it.

There is much transpiring both at the Porte and in diplomatic confidence, that I transfer in Cipher, which would intensely interest you, but which I cannot write. I violated instructions in sending the few confidential papers I have sent to wife, but it was to guard against future contingencies personal to myself.

My wife must feel like a fish out of water -- nothing to do, but flounder around. Tell her just to go over a little oftener, and look at farm -- tenants + colts not to mention the remnant of my fine cattle -- it will do her good. She has made a better farmer than me, for she had sense enough to enlarge the farm; but I think the breaking + grubing{?sic} should now cease, until I go back, for she will leave me no employment.

Ask Moldridge(?) for me, and also Tipps + House to make Finley(?) retain Lilla -- her place is not secure. They can place it on the ground of efficiency with truth. Remember me to your mother + Lilly(?) + all. Kiss for me the babies. Love to Wife. Sincerely your friend A. W. Terrell.
