In expressing my thanks and
those of my associate for this assurance,
I beg to leave to say that the American
Board of Missions and its Mission-
aries have ever appreciated the favor
of the Imperial Government enjoyed
by them for many years. This ap-
preciation, the fundamental rules of the
Society, and also ordinary common
sense must ever subordinate our
conduct to the principle of carefully
abstaining from unlawful acts our-
selves, and from countenancing
in any way revolutionists or their
subversive schemes. Out strict con-
formity to this rule is already well
known to all Ottoman officials who
