Toch Brothers’ R. I. W. Toxement for waterproofing concrete, cement mortar, etc., operates in a different way from other powder and paste compounds offered for this purpose.

Toxement lubricates the mass by acting upon the cement and causes the aggregate to run together into perfect density, and this is accomplished with 25 per cent less water than when no Toxement is used.

No foreign material is relied upon to fill the voids, the aim being to make dense concrete, because dense concrete is waterproof and the results obtained will be permanent.

W. L. Macatee & Sons of Houston have made a specialty of waterproof engineering for a number of years and will be only too glad to serve to the fullest extent at any time.

The largest room in many a house is the room for improvement.

Cornell-Wood-Board, the logical wall and ceiling material, manufactured from log to finished board under one roof and one management, is made from pure, selected woods. Each individual fibre is thoroughly soaked in a moisture proofing compound; and the finished product is then surface sized— both back and front—to make the board practically immune to atmospheric conditions.

Cornell-Wood-Board, for walls, ceilings and partitions, is used with equal satisfaction for repair work and new construction. It is installed in homes, theatres, stores, office buildings, garages, farm houses, etc., and is even serving its purposes in barracks, etc., the U. S. Government having specified and applied millions of square feet of CORNELL-WOOD-BOARD in cantonments.

“Architectural Terra Cotta”

The extent of the application of Architectural Terra Cotta in Modern Architecture has been wonderfully illustrated on most of the important work issued from our leading Texas architects’ offices during the current year.

Architectural Terra Cotta is now made in all colors and special surfaces and it is possible for the manufacturers to match approximately nearly all the various kinds of stone used in building.

Among the buildings in Texas on which have recently been successfully treated with the products of the Atlantic and Atlantic Terra Cotta Companies are: American Exchange Bank, Dallas, Texas; Lang & Witchell, Architects, Temple, Texas; Emanu-El, Dallas, Texas; Hubbell & Greene, Architects; Masonic Temple and Kemp Library, Wichita Falls, Texas; Madorie & Field, Architects; Science Hall, Sam Houston Normal, Huntsville, Texas, Endress & Watkins, Architects; Herman Building, Houston, Texas, F. S. Glover & Son, Architects.

Arthur P. Clark, Dallas, representative of Atlanta and Atlantic Terra Cotta Companies.

Some of our members remember the “Dark Til Daylight Club” and recollect that Ed Goodwin had something to do with its popularity. Ed is now with James B. Clow and Sons and is located at St. Louis. He will be down in this territory occasionally to renew old acquaintances, however.

Regular Paradux-Rex Canvas Roofing

Manufactured by the Flintkote Company, 88 Pearl St., Boston, Mass.

A permanent waterproof canvas covering for sleeping porch floors, balcony floors, bay window roofs and decks of all kinds.

PARADUX consists of a strong, clean canvas sheet backed by a heavy layer of saturated and coated felt (same material as Rex Flintkote Roofing) securely stuck to canvas with pressure so satuation [saturation] will not penetrate canvas and affect paint. As soon as laid Paradux must be painted with two coats good quality lead and oil paint. A coat of lead and oil paint every three years will make Paradux last indefinitely.

PARADUX has given satisfaction for over fifteen years. Stocks carried in all jobbing centers of Texas.

Secret of Failure

I’m going to set the river on fire—tomorrow.

I’ve made up my mind to turn over a new leaf and get busy and DO things—tomorrow.

I’ve fooled around all day, and yesterday, too, and the day before, but things are going to hum—tomorrow.

‘lve had an idea for sometime that This or That would be a crackin’ good scheme, and I’m going to try it out—tomorrow.

I’ve been losing business or else standing still for I’ll be durned if I know for how long—but you watch my smoke —tomorrow.

I’ve been setting a lazy, no-account example around this store; I act like a hookworm, and talk like a clam; I mumble around like a chronic invalid; I’ve got a face on me like an affidavit and every clerk in the place looks like his last friend was dead, but you watch us spruce up and be snappy—tomorrow.

I haven’t shown myself much of a merchant, I haven’t kept up with the times, I ’’haven’t felt that there was much call for our goods” and I haven’t believed heretofore in proddin’ the public or gettin’ into the limelight—but you wacth [watch] me begin to get ready to start to commence to prepare to undertake to study to decide to finally Get a Move On—Tomorrow.

But not Today!

Lord, No! Oh not Today! —The Guinea Pig.

Critic—That auburn-haired poet says that the body is the house of the soul.

Contractor—That’s all right; but why the terra-cotta roof?

No reference to allusions, but Mr. Slattery, whom some of us remember, will attend the convention, incidently to look after the interests of the U. S. Gypsum Co.

posed to force cooled air through hollow walls, electric fans being employed and the air at the intakes cooled by passing it through a water screen. By placing the fan at the highest point on one side of the building and the intake at the lowest point on another, it is believed a thorough circulation will be obtained. The side most exposed to the rays of the sun may be treated as a separate unit, with a greater flow of cooled air and a more direct outlet. Engineers estimate that the cost of the electric current would not exceed one cent an hour.

Every architect and builder, who is directly or indirectly interested in the problem of suggesting or contributing to the many material things which wo to make homes more attractive, convenient and comfortable, should know that the RUUD-HUMPHREY WATER HEATER COMPANY OF TEXAS maintains offices in Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston for the distribution of these justly famous Water Heaters.

With the large and very complete line of both Ruud and Humphrey Water Heates [Heaters] always carried in stock, the service to patrons is immediate—goods being shipped promptly upon receipt of order.

The expert advice of their engineers, who have devoted years of study to Water Heating problems, are at your command and you are cordially invited to make inquiries, to the end that mutually pleasant and profitable business relations may be established.

Interlocking Tile—The Best Wall

Interlocking Tile is the building material with which the architect can and does give his clients fire-proof, non-conductive, damp-proof, light weight walls at a lower cost than was the case before its introduction. Interlocking Tile is brick which has been scientifically improved. It not only is more easily and economically handled and laid up, but also renders more efficient service.

Interlocking Tile is therefore one of the standard building materials with which the progressive architects are solving their wall building problems. Naturally he who offers and gives his clients better walls at lower cost outdistances his less alert and less observing competitors.

Directions for use: Specify Interlocking Tile (now made in both 6-in. and 8-in. sizes) for all exterior walls where you want them to be strong, rigid, absolutely damp-proof, warm in winter and cool in summer, as well as low enough in cost to insure the job being let. For very inexpensive cottages, factory buildings, side and rear walls of business property, etc., leave the tile work exposed; it is more pleasing than kiln run commons. Where ornamentation is required, finish with stucco or face with face brick. For detail drawings see “Details of Construction” booklet issued by Fraser Brick Company.

Interlocking Tile is sold at a uniform scale of prices in all parts of the State, being manufactured by the Fraser Brick Company at Ginger, and for them by Wichita Falls Brick & Tile Co., Wichita Falls; Athens Tile & Silo Co., Athens; Seguin Brick & Tile Co., Seguin; and Star Clay Products Co., Elmendorf.

Efficiency, Economy and Service—the architect gets them all in Interlocking Tile.

U. S. Quarry Tiles are made from shale, thoroughly hard burned to a beautiful red shade and the absorption is very low. They are made in sizes 12x12 to 3x3, in thickness of 1½ to ¾ inches.

Sizes 6x6 and under are also made in ½-inch thickness.

Special attention is given to sizing and shading and the tiles are acknowledged to be the best on the market.

Two factories are being operated on quarry tiles, with a daily capacity of ten thousand square feet.

The Acme Brick Co. of Fort Worth are Texas distributors for these tiles and carry stocks of our material at Denton, Texas.

Metal Lath

Northwestern Expanded Metal Co.

Metal Lath is a metal fabric designed as a supporting and reinforcing base for any plaster applied to walls or ceilings and for supporting stucco on the exterior of buildings.

There are two general types of metal lath, one known as wire lath and the other as expanded metal lath. Expanded metal is used far more extensively than wire lath, because of the ease with which it may be applied and the facility with which it may be handled on the job.

Expanded metal lath is manufactured from sheet steel of various gauges, the heaviest being number 22 and the lightest number 28. The sheets are built and then expanded or opened out to form a network of meshes. The finished sheets are 18 or 24 inches wide and 96 inches long. The length is actually a little more than this, to allow for lapping at the ends. In erecting metal lath, the sheets are placed with the length at right angles to the studding or other supports. The length of 96 inches works our evently, whether the supports are spaced 12 inches or 16 inches apart.

Metal Lath was first designed to meet the demand for a plaster supporting base that would be suitable for use in fireproof construction. In consequence there are many architects who have the impression that metal lath is only suitable to use in fireresisting construction.
