Metal Lath

Northwestern Expanded Metal Co.

Metal Lath is a metal fabric designed as a supporting and re-
inforcing base for any plaster applied to walls or ceilings and for
supporting stucco on the exterior of buildings.

There are two general types of metal lath, one known as wire
lath and the other as expanded metal lath. Expanded metal is used
far more extensively than wire lath, because of the ease with which
it may be applied and the facility with which it may be handled
on the job.

Expanded metal lath is manufactured from sheet steel of various
gauges, the heaviest being number 22 and the lightest number 28. The
sheets are built and then expanded or opened out to form a network
of meshes. The finished sheets are 18 or 24 inches wide and 96 inches
long. The length is actually a little more than this, to allow for
lapping at the ends. In erecting metal lath, the sheets are placed with
the length at right angles to the studding or other supports. The
length of 96 inches works our evently, whether the supports are
spaced 12 inches or 16 inches apart.

Metal Lath was first designed to meet the demand for a plaster
supporting base that would be suitable for use in fireproof construction.
In consequence there are many architects who have the impression
that metal lath is only suitable to use in fire-
resisting construction. Metal Lath has
