I give him from time to time, money for the marketing +
he keeps and reports every cent expended. He under-
stands that he gets his house rent free, and I pay the market
bill; in consideration, everything is to be kept nice, clean,
and in order, and his services are due in the general
economy just(?) as a hired man. I cant tell, but will
report in a few weeks how it works.

If you knew how/ how little I
feel inclined to dine people, you would not fear
my extravagances. I will do only what must be done
while I maintain my present position, and just
as little as I can. I am going down to the Troad (old
Troy) if I can get away, this week. They have laid bare
a great part of the ancient walls, and made lately
some very interesting discoveries in excavating.
