Selamlik Ceremony

A religious ceremony adopted by the Ottoman sultan Abdulhamid II involving a procession from the sultan's quarters in the palace to a mosque for Friday prayers. See Deringil, The Well-Protected Domains: Ideology and the Legitimation of Power in the Ottoman Empire, 1876-1909 (1998). For an image of a ceremony that Terrell might have himself attended, in March of 1895, see https://collections.eastman.org/objects/340444/constantinople-the-ceremony-of-the-selamlik;jsessionid=5FC01B33305FFC5EDA42A42D89EC7381?ctx=cf74a6ce-133f-409d-85e1-e72357d17dd2&idx=107.
